As the situation in Afghanistan continues to develop, we are taking steps to help prepare for Afghan refugees to be resettled in Utah. Here are some facts about what’s happening now:

  • Salt Lake City is one of only 19 cities across the United States that will be receiving Afghan refugees.

  • Utah is preparing to receive around 1300 refugees from Afghanistan.

  • There are only 2 resettlement agencies here in Utah, Catholic Community Services (CCS) and International Rescue Committee (IRC).

  • Lifting Hands International is working in cooperation with these 2 resettlement agencies to provide household items that the incoming refugees will need so they won’t have to purchase these items.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Thank you so much for your generosity and concern for the Afghan refugees that will be coming to Utah. Your outpouring of support has allowed us to collect an amazing number of hygiene, cleaning, and household items that the Afghans will need when they arrive.

One of the best ways to help now is to donate gift cards for local grocery stores. Gift cards to Smith’s or Walmart will be given directly to families to purchase groceries, hygiene supplies, and other needed items.

Donating aid supplies through our Needs List or Amazon Wishlist (both below) is still an option. We will prioritize any aid received through these means to ensure the needs of Afghan refugees are met. Once those needs are satisfied, remaining aid supplies will be redirected to help meet other refugee needs.

Aid items can also be purchased from our Amazon Wishlist and sent directly to our humanitarian aid warehouse. Click on the button below to visit our Amazon Wishlist:

If you would like information regarding the incoming refugees, where they will be relocated, or how you might be able to help them in other ways, please reach out to the resettlement agencies directly. The buttons below link to their websites:

The needs of resettled refugees in Utah will continue long after the public attention has faded. But we are in it for the long haul. We will distribute aid to arriving refugee families through our partnership with resettlement agencies in Utah for as long as the need persists. Any aid we receive in excess of current needs will be used to address future unmet needs among the refugee populations we support.
